This film tells the story about the plantation forests of the Central North Island and how radiata pine has become the foundation for our forest industry. The film starts with the felling of the natural forests by the early settlers and goes on to show the development of the New Zealand forestry industry from the 1920s to the present day. Rare archival film provides a fascinating glimpse into the nursery techniques, harvesting and milling operations of the last 70 years. The film concludes with a look at the uses of radiata pine, the work of the New Zealand Forest Research Institute and today's silvicultural practices.
The film "The Old Crop" was made to mark the 50th Jubilee of the Forest Research Institute in 1997.
